Here are some tips on keeping your SSN safe and secure:

  • Do not routinely carry your physical Social Security card.
  • Be cautious about who you give your SSN to and always ask why it’s needed, how it will be used, and
what will happen if you refuse.
  • Never say your SSN aloud in public.
  • Shred documents containing your SSN before discarding them.
  • Create and Monitor Your “my Social Security” Account: Create a personal account on the official SSA
website (www.ssa.gov/myaccount). This allows you to track your records, check your benefit statements,
and identify any suspicious activity. Creating an account also prevents someone else from creating one
in your name if they obtain your SSN.
